The present invention relates generally to stent delivery systems, and more particularly to a balloon stent delivery system having a sheath or sleeve slidably disposed about the balloon and the balloon delivery system.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Balloon catheters have been utilized for a variety of purposes such as dilating blood vessels and other body passageways, and in particular, stenosed vessels or other constrictions in vessels. Typically, a balloon catheter includes an elongated shaft having an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member. The inner tubular member includes a balloon located at the distal end of the inner tubular member and a lumen that extends between the distal and proximal ends of the inner tubular member. The balloon is typically located distally of the distal end of the inner tubular member and may be formed of a flexible material. The outer tubular member includes a shaft having a lumen extending therethrough that is fluidly connected to the lumen in the inner tubular member.
One type of balloon delivery system utilizes a sheath, such as a sleeve, that slides over the balloon and the balloon is then threaded over the sheath. One disadvantage with this type of delivery system is that the sleeve is typically made from silicone or another low friction material that may not provide optimal lubricity when in contact with the balloon. In addition, the sheath of the delivery system may become unthreaded from the balloon, which may allow the balloon to come off the sheath or release of the balloon. In the event that the balloon or the balloon sheath or sleeve is released, the balloon may not be available for deployment. In addition, the sheath may be capable of further advance over the balloon prior to the balloon being fully inflated.
Another type of balloon delivery system utilizes a balloon having a preformed slit or plurality of preformed slits in its wall. A sheath or sleeve is typically positioned over the balloon prior to inflation. One disadvantage with this type of system is that a relatively large catheter is required to accommodate the preformed slit balloon. The large
